Tips for an Australian resume
Australian resumes usually leave out personal details such as a photo, age or date of birth, and marital status. Instead, put your Australian mobile, email and location under your name, together with your visa and availability, so employers see what they check first.
List work and education from the most recent, and keep each duty to one short line. The Australian Government's Workforce Australia site suggests about 2 pages and recommends listing licences such as a driver licence, first aid or RSA with their expiry dates.
For references, list a manager or supervisor who knows your work, and always ask their permission first. Save your resume as a PDF to upload to Seek or Indeed, or print it to hand in at cafés and restaurants. Adjust your profile and cover letter to match each job ad.
Frequently asked questions
Should I put a photo on an Australian resume?
It's usually left out. Age, date of birth and marital status are generally not included either.
Can I include work experience from overseas?
Yes. Add the business name and city and country, and describe what you did in English. Similar work counts as good experience.
What if I have no work experience?
You can include volunteering, school activities and casual jobs. With little experience, you can put education and skills above work experience.
Do I have to list references?
Listing contacts is best, but if you don't have anyone yet you can write 'Available on request' and arrange referees before interviews.
Where are my details saved?
Only in your browser; nothing is sent to a server. To use another device, save a PDF or copy the text.
